14 March 2024 – A Day in the Life of Abed Salama
Nathan Thrall and Prof Shahram Akbarzadeh

In Nathan Thrall’s A Day in the Life of Abed Salama, the struggle over Israel/Palestine is given a profoundly human face through the heart-wrenching story of a tragic accident that killed Abed Salama’s five-year-old son. Granular in its recitation of the daily injustices that make up the lives of the roughly 3.2 million Palestinians living under occupation in the West Bank, and even-handed in detailing the intractable narratives of the region, the book is a mirror and we are challenged to face it. Watch Thrall in a conversation led by Professor Shahram Akbarzadeh.

7 September 2023 – MESF & AIIA Panel Discussion: Australia’s Relations with the Middle East
Mr Alastair Roff, Prof Shahram Akbarzadeh, Professor Sally Totman, Mr Roland Jabbour OAM, Dr Rodger Shanahan, Mr James Bryan

Australia has viewed the Middle East as a region of great cultural, economic, and geopolitical importance. With the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan in 2021, Australia concluded two decades of military operations in the Middle East. Yet the region remains important for global peace and security. This discussion is an exploration of how the region’s complex and dynamic landscape affect Australia’s interests and how best our policy making can take advantage of opportunities and mitigate risks.

27 August 2023 – ‘The Weaponization of Religious Myths: An Ethnography of Shi’ite Gendered Narratives’
Dr Mariam Farida— Lecturer in Security Studies, Department of Security Studies and Criminology

This research delves into the varying roles of women in non-state and extremist groups, with a focus on how religious myths are used to shape gender narratives, specifically the role of women alongside men. It centers on Zainab, a prominent figure in Shi’ism, and her role in mobilizing women in Hizbullah. Ethnographic observations and interviews with Lebanese Shi’ite women examine how Zainab’s story is weaponized to define strategic gender roles, shedding light on the connection between religious narratives and their social impact.

27 March 2023 – ‘Everyday Choices: The Role of Competing Authorities and Social Institutions in Politics and Development
Prof. Ellen Lust

Scholars and practitioners seek development solutions through the engineering and strengthening of state institutions. Yet, the state is not the only or often even the primary arena shaping how citizens, service providers, and state officials engage in actions that constitute politics and development. These individuals are members of religious orders, ethnic communities, and other groups that make claims about them, creating incentives that shape their actions. Recognizing how individuals experience these claims and view the choices before them is essential to understanding political processes and development outcomes.
