Aftab is a PhD student at the Alfred Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation, Deakin University. His PhD research focuses on the regional geopolitical architecture in relation to Afghanistan and the influence of regional powers on Afghanistan under Taliban regime. His research interest examines the intersection of international security and strategic interests of the states to analyse the geopolitical and geostrategic dynamics in South Asia and the Middle East. He also takes interest in the energy security of the region and its interplay with the renewable energy resources.

He has worked extensively in the energy sector from 2006 – 2013 and in the research and administration services in the higher education sector since 2015
