First Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri registered his nomination for the presidency. In his registration speech, Jahangiri, alluding to the ending of sanctions and new JCPOA, said that “in the next four years, we have a golden opportunity to move towards solving Iran’s fundamental problems” including “a de-escalation inside and outside the country”, the alleviation of poverty and eliminating discrimination, whether for gender, age, ethnicity, or sect. Although a political moderate, Jahangiri is likely to be promoted as a first choice candidate by the Reformists in the absence of Foreign Minister Mohammad-Javad Zarif.
