Nami Stands aside for Raisi

Conservative candidate and Ahmadinejad-era cabinet member Mohammad-Hassan Nami announced that he was standing down as a candidate in favour of Ebrahim Raisi. Nami added that he was in no way pre-empting the Guardian Council’s decision on his nomination, but rather was keeping a promise he made before nominating, that he would stand aside if Raisi chose to run.

Registrations Open for Iranian Presidential Election

Registrations to nominate for candidacy for the 13th Iranian Presidential Elections commenced today at 8am. Registrations will be open in the Ministry of Interior Building in Fatemi Street, Tehran, from 8am to 6pm from Tuesday May 11 until Saturday May 15. Among the well-known candidates for the first day were military leader Mohammad-Hassan Nami, clerical politician Mohammad-Zare Foumani, and diplomat Vahid Karimi.

Mohammad-Hasan Nami announces Candidacy

Former minister Mohammad-Hassan Nami today announced he will run for President, revealing his electoral slogan “A Return to Ethics and Reliance on Domestic Capability”. Nami has held several roles in the regular army, including as military attaché in North Korea, and cited his decades of administrative experience when explaining why he was running. Nami is one of several candidates who are former members of the Ahmadinejad administration, including Rostam Ghasemi, Ali Nikzad and Fereydoon Abbasi.
